Dr. Joanna Diab
Licensed Clinical PsychologistI can describe my approach to therapy as one that is collaborative, eclectic, and individualized to the needs of my patients. I believe that the therapeutic alliance accounts for a large percentage of positive clinical outcomes, and building a safe and trusting relationship with my patients is a primary aim of my work. Within the relationship, we may explore thoughts, emotions, dreams, fantasies, fears and desires to better understand both conscious and unconscious patterns. Through this exploration, individuals often gain insight, experience emotional relief, and develop more fulfilling relationships with themselves and others.
I conceptualize my cases through a psychodynamic/psychoanalytic lens; however, I integrate other therapeutic approaches into my work depending on the individual needs of my clients, such as cognitive processing therapy (CPT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and other evidence-based and third-wave approaches.
I am further developing a specialty in working with journalists who are exposed to occupational stress and trauma. I have a strong appreciation for the role of journalism in society, and consider it a privilege to work with news professionals. I have received training from the Global Center for Journalism and Trauma on the professional culture and occupational challenges of journalists. In addition to using HIPAA-compliant telehealth software, I have also received training from Freedom of the Press Foundation on best practices for digital security when using telehealth technology.
I hold a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) and Master of Psychology degree from The George Washington University, a Master of Arts in Psychology from The New School, and I completed my postdoctoral fellowship at McLean Fernside, Harvard Medical School. I am licensed in the state of New York and in Beirut, Lebanon. I am currently accepting new clients via telehealth.
